1987 Specialized Hardrock

Recent find on Facebook Marketplace
(Feb 11, 2026)

I recently found this Specialized Hardrock (1987) for free on my local Facebook marketplace, which was going to the dump if it wasn’t picked up by anyone. Quick little 10 minute drive and the bike is in my car.

The gentleman with the bike thought it was a Specialized Stumpjumper but after looking the bike over, it’s a lower-end Hardrock with Roller-Cam brakes in the rear.

I’ve worked on some rusted up bikes before but this one is by far the worst. The original owner bought it in Santa Rosa, CA and in the last decade or so it ended up in the North Western most part of California living in a blackberry bush. No saddle post was installed for I don’t know how long, it saved me the annoyance of trying to remove a frozen saddle post. Surprisingly the bottom bracket was pretty dry and clean.

The bike frame itself has pretty light rust compared to the nuts and bolts of the bike. That rear freewheel and the chain had the most rust.

Most of the disassembly wasn’t too bad. Lot’s of PB Blaster and heat helped. The worst parts were removing a crankarm that had a seized nut and needing bolt cutters to remove the completely solid chain.

The Crankset dust covers being plastic were to brittle that they just had to be snapped out of place.

The original stem and cockpit for the bike.

Looking Forward: The bike is being completely stripped down at the moment and built back up with parts from my parts bin and cheap parts off Facebook marketplace.

There are some cheap 26″ Araya wheels on Facebook Marketplace I am looking to score soon and some replacement parts like the 26.0 saddle post I bought off the internet to add to this build.

The build is going towards a ATB (All-Terrain Bike) with drop handlebars and non-aero brake levers. Most likely I will be adding some Suntour barcons that I have in my stash of parts.

I’ll add another progress build post and completed build once it’s there but it’s currently (Feb 2026) stripped with only a fork and headset installed.
